I first learned about the I Love You Tummy Massage from our chiropractor, who recommended it as a natural way to alleviate discomfort for babies experiencing tummy troubles.

It's a safe practice that aligns with natural healthcare approaches, offering a drug-free solution that you can perform at home.

The Role of the Large Intestine

Understanding the function of the large intestine helps to understand why this massage is so effective for resolving discomfort related to constipation and gas. The large intestine's primary role is to rid waste from the body. Issues like constipation occur when stool moves too slowly through the intestine.

Preparing for the Massage

Before you begin, ensure you have a comfortable, safe space where you can lay your baby down. Choose a time when your baby is calm and not hungry, such as right after a bath. Gather some baby-safe lotion or oil (jojoba oil, coconut oil, olive oil, etc.) to make the massage smooth and pleasant. Warming the lotion or oil in your hands feels comforting to your baby and helps relax their muscles. Sometimes I even add digestive support essential oils to the carrier oil (meaning the jojoba, coconut, or olive oil) if I feel an extra boost is needed.

The I Motion

The massage starts with the letter I. Using two fingers or your thumb, press firmly down on your baby’s left side (your right) and massage straight down from about the bottom of the ribcage to the top of the hip bone. (See images above.) This motion begins the process of moving any trapped air or stool downward.

The L Motion

Next comes the L. Start on your baby’s right side (your left) and massage straight across the belly above the belly button. Then, continue down your baby’s left side as you did in the previous step.

The Final U Motion

The U completes the pathway of the large intestine. Start on your baby’s right side (your left), pressing firmly with two fingers or your thumb, moving upward from about the hip bone to the rib cage. Repeat the steps from the L motion to complete the U shape.

Listening for Results

You'll know the massage is working when you hear air bubbles moving along the large intestine during the process. These sounds indicate that any trapped gas is being released, offering immediate relief to your little one.

Adding Bicycle Kicks

To finish, consider incorporating some gentle bicycle kicks. Mimicking a knee-to-chest stretch for your baby, this motion can further help release gas and encourage bowel movements. It’s a fun addition to the routine that your baby may find enjoyable.

Making Massage a Routine

Incorporating the "I Love You Tummy Massage" into a daily routine can prevent tummy troubles before they start. Regular massages promote healthy digestion and prevent the buildup of gas and stool, leading to happier days and more restful nights for both you and your child.
